How long does an arbequina olive tree take to grow?
If you’re thinking of planting an arbequina olive tree or you’re simply curious about how this Mediterranean variety grows, Mas Montseny explains it clearly and simply.
The arbequina olive tree is known for its resilience, relatively fast growth, and above all, for producing high-quality olive oil: smooth, fruity and balanced. But… how long does it really take to grow and start producing?
Stages of growth of an arbequina olive tree
1. Year 1: rooting and adaptation
During the first year, the main work happens underground. The roots develop and adapt to the soil. Even if there’s not much visible growth, this phase is essential. At Mas Montseny, we recommend moderate but consistent watering and protecting the young tree from frost.
2. Years 2–3: vegetative growth
In this phase, the tree’s growth becomes visible. Branches elongate, the canopy takes shape, and the trunk strengthens. It’s a good time to start pruning gently to shape the tree.
3. Years 3–4: first flowers and olives
With the right conditions, arbequina olive trees may begin producing small quantities of olives between the third and fourth year. It’s an early sign of maturity.
4. From year 5 onwards: regular production
From the fifth year, arbequina trees typically begin to produce olives more consistently and in greater quantity, assuming they’ve been well cared for.
