The history of Mas Montseny

Tradition since 1940

A journey of more than 150 years that has left important marks and treasures

The origin

The origin of Mas Montseny dates back to the 19th century. That was when the first of the Catà family arrived at the estate to work as a sharecropper. He worked there with his children and grandchildren until the beginning of the 20th century. From then on, one of the grandsons, Pep Montseny (nickname of Josep Catà Gomis), bought the estate and the land.

The birth of the olive mill

In 1940, just after the war, great-grandfather Pep Montseny and his son, the grandfather Montseny, at only 18 years old, set up the first stone press to make oil. The news spread quickly, and neighboring farms came to mill their olives. This is how they started to provide milling services for Mas de Sant Ramon, Mas de la Cansalada, Mas de la Pegalós, Mas de Cavaller, Mas Santamaria, La Torre de Fàbregas and Mas Montseny. That family initiative is today the reference mill, offering milling, oils, and high-quality services with comprehensive support for farmers.

We preserve the entire history of the mill: from the first stones to the cofins, the old presses, the carts, and the tools.

The end of the 20th century

The saga continued, and in the 1970s Josep Maria Catà Català joined the family business with new ideas, strength, and enthusiasm to modernize the mill with new machinery and successful new crops such as the peach tree. Today, the Mas Montseny peaches are among the most highly valued in southern Europe.

A new millennium drives us forward

Mas Montseny entered the 21st century with strength: experience is an asset, and the pursuit of the highest quality olive oil is the drive to incorporate new milling systems.

Thus, in 2006 the mill was modernized again: a continuous system was installed, improving the milling process.

Later, after studying agricultural engineering, in 2012 Roger Catà Plana joined with full dedication to Mas Montseny. The three Catà generations established Mas Montseny Fruits.

Connecting traditional and modern agriculture

In 2013 we launched the Oli Mare project to produce a high-end organic oil and began exporting fruit to France.

In 2014 we entered the European market: first Germany, and by 2015 fruit was exported throughout Europe. The Oli Mare was also presented, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the mill.

In 2016 fruit exports reached China and we won the Liderpack Award for best packaging in Spain in the food category for the design of the Oli Mare bottle.
